Biography

Simon is an accidental, award-winning innovator, designer and social entrepreneur. He is also an inspirational speaker on open innovation, access to medicines in developing countries, design and the effective use of social media. Simon is the visionary behind ColaLife that transformed access to diarrhoea treatment in Zambia by applying the techniques used by the producers of fast moving consumer goods to the distribution of a health product.

This is having a direct impact of child survival in Zambia but he is also working to influence essential medicine distribution across the whole of sub-Saharan Africa by proactively sharing ColaLife’s findings and learning. He has worked with the Diarrhoea Innovations Group since 2017 on an application to get co-packaged ORS and zinc on the WHO Essential Medicines List – a decision on this is expected in mid 2019. Over a 39-year career Simon has been a leader in the voluntary, private and public sectors. He has lived and worked in South America, the Caribbean, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. He graduated in Agriculture (BSc (Hons), Reading) and has a post graduate qualification in Tropical Animal Health (MSc, Edinburgh).

In 2015 Simon was elected to the Ashoka Fellowship of social entrepreneurs.
