AHAIC History

The Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) is a biennial conference that brings together stakeholders from across the globe to discuss and address pressing health challenges in Africa. Here’s a brief overview of its history and development:

The AHAIC was initiated by Amref Health Africa, a leading health organization in Africa, with the primary goal of providing a platform for sharing knowledge, innovations, and strategies to improve health outcomes on the continent. The conference aims to foster collaboration among governments, health organizations, the private sector, and civil society to tackle health issues affecting Africa.

Past Conferences

AHAIC 2023

Theme: Building Resilient Health Systems for Africa.

The 5th Biennial AHAIC took place in Kigali, Rwanda, from March 5 to 8, 2023. Over 2,000 delegates from more than 50 countries participated in the event. For the first time, the conference featured an exciting physical activity session called “Wogging” – a combination of jogging, running, and walking – during Kigali’s Car Free Day. This activity actively engaged participants before the official opening of the conference, promoting healthy living.

AHAIC 2021

Theme: Decade for Action – Driving Momentum to Achieve UHC in Africa

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 4th edition of AHAIC was held in 2021 as the first virtual conference of its kind, under the theme “Decade for Action – Driving Momentum to Achieve UHC in Africa.” This exciting virtual experience saw participation from 3,000 delegates representing 98 countries across the world.

AHAIC 2019

Theme: Achieving universal health coverage in Africa by 2030

AHAIC 2019 was held in Kigali for the first time, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Rwanda. The theme was “Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Africa by 2030,” and the event attracted delegates from 49 African nations.

Key Outcomes:​

  • Amref Health Africa and Results for Development launched the Strategic Purchasing Africa Resource Center (SPARC).
  • Launched the Youth4UHC movement.
  • Established the Women in Global Health (WGH) Africa Regional Hub.
  • Introduced the 1st Africa Media Health Awards.
  • Launched i-PUSH, a collaborative initiative between Amref Health Africa and PharmAccess Foundation.

AHAIC 2017

Theme: People, Systems and Innovations

The AHAIC 2017 hosted in Nairobi, Kenya, brought together 900 delegates from various sectors. The main theme was “People, Systems, and Innovations,” and the event featured 9 plenary sessions, 15 track sessions, and 14 satellite sessions.

AHAIC 2014

Theme: From evidence to action: lasting health change for Africa.

Amref organized the first AHAIC in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme “From Evidence to Action: Lasting Health Change for Africa.” The conference aimed to explore how African countries can shape the global health agenda to improve health and human rights on the continent.
